Our History

Over the years CAMP-of-the-WOODS has undergone many changes, from its humble beginnings in 1900 as 'Camp Iroquois' on the shores of Lake George, to today's 90+ acre family resort located on beautiful Lake Pleasant. Complemented by a 1,400-foot natural beach, a 1,300-seat auditorium, a state-of-the-art sports complex, tennis courts, a challenge course, climbing wall, zip-line, and much more, CAMP-of-the-WOODS strives to make each guest's stay a time of spiritual growth, relaxation, and recreation. Since its founding in 1900 by George 'Pop' Tibbitts, CAMP-of-the-WOODS has provided an environment where families, individuals and groups can focus on Jesus Christ. Now over 100 years old, CAMP-of-the-WOODS continues to minister to individuals and families. 'Pop' Tibbitts founded and served as director until his death in 1948. Gordon L. Purdy and Don Purdy then succeeded him in that role for many years. Norm Sonju served as Chairman of the Board and CEO of CAMP-of-the-WOODS from 1997 until he handed the CEO reins over to Jim Hammond on August 1, 2005. The Lord has truly blessed this ministry with these godly leaders who desire to honor Him through CAMP-of-the-WOODS.

Summer Season

For 9 weeks of summer, CAMP-of-the-WOODS provides week-long vacation packages to families. Members daily have the opportunity to grow spiritually through outstanding chapel and seminar speakers and refresh physically through various recreational activities. The nine-week summer season runs from late June through August. Our vision is to be a haven of renewal to strengthen the faith of individuals and families.

Conference Season

CAMP-of-the-WOODS (COTW) is a year-round, full-service conference center that hosts a variety of church and Christian ministry retreats including men, women, youth, college, couples, and leadership retreats. Groups bring speakers and plan their own programs, while COTW provides delicious food, upscale lodging, spacious meeting rooms, and state-of-the-art recreational facilities. We offer both adult and youth weekends, with specific services and menus for each.

Tapawingo

Tapawingo is an island camp for girls ages 9-17. With programming and teaching aimed specifically at the needs of young women, Tapawingo promises to be a blessing to all campers. The mission of Tapawingo is “to clearly and lovingly glorify, communicate, and uplift Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior through personal example, meaningful activity, biblical direction, and Christ-centered relationships in a safe and friendly environment that promotes fun, learning, growth, and development.”

LIFT

As affirmed in our mission statement, CAMP-of-the-WOODS is also committed to 'developing Christian leaders'. To accomplish this, the LIFT (Leaders In Further Training) program disciples young adults to become leaders who make an impact in their communities and around the world.

Missions

We support many missionaries and projects across the world that spread the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and support enriching environments for spiritual growth and communal
fellowship.
